Limited time offer for FX Photo Studio!

I’ve been lax in dealing with my correspondence of late. Personal matters have driven a lot of things to the side, including this blog. So, when I came across an e-mail from MacPhun telling me that their app FX Photo Studio was going to be free in the iTunes store for just one day in April, I figured that I had missed an opportunity to share this with you. Well not quite. FX Photo Studio, is available FREE TODAY. FX Photo Studio is a photo manipulation app that boasts 194 different photo effects. We haven’t looked at it before as a potential review, but we will be considering it in the future. But if you want to check it out for yourself, today is the best time to pick it up. Just head to the iTunes Store and get your copy for iPhone or iPad before the price goes back up.

UPDATE: Whoops, it turns out I did miss the free day, but MacPhun was so happy with the numbers they got, they have kept FX Photo Studio at free and they are hoping to get 10 million downloads by the end of May.

Apple USB Superdrive – A cautionary tale

by Doc Coleman - Nifty Tech Editor January 15, 2013 Editorial

This article isn’t a real review. To be honest, it can’t be, as I had the product in my possession for a grand total of four days. As the headline above says, this is a cautionary tale. It is a warning about the way that companies advertise their products to make them sound better than they actually are, stupid decisions corporations make that make their products less useful and pull sales out of their own pockets, and how good customer service can still save the day. I hope you’ll read my little tale, as it may give you the opportunity to save yourself some time and money.

Support the Staff’s latest endeavor!

Yes, it’s been a while since our last review went live. Sometimes it gets like that, with new revisions coming out right when you think a review is ready, or discovering some problem that knocks a promising candidate right out of the water. And sometimes, life gets in the way. This post is about some of that life.

If you’ve ever taken time to visit our Meet the Staff! page, you’ll know that both Scott and I write fiction in addition to writing tech reviews. We’ve each had our own projects from time to time. Now we’ve got a new project  where we’re both going to be participating. It’s not a Nifty Tech project, but I thought I’d share it with you and let you decide if you are interested.

It has been a while since I’ve done one of these. It isn’t that there aren’t plenty of folks out there worth following. Quite the contrary, there are a lot of them. The fault has been mine. I’ve simply been trying to work too many projects.

But this isn’t about me. This is about someone who has bent his creative energies to finding new ways to helping others discover and develop their own creativity. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the man behind the Roundtable Podcast. I give you Dave Robison, aka. @WritersPodcast.

The Janus Affair: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel

Fastens your seat belts, folks, this one is one hell of a ride.

If you read last year’s review of Phoenix Rising, you probably either already know what I’m about to say, or you’re already nose deep into the book and not reading this review. For those of you who are coming late into the game, or just enjoy reading my reviews, Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris are at it again! On May 29th, 2012, Harper Voyager released their second Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel, The Janus Affair.  Once again, Wellington Thornhill Books, and Eliza D. Braun have emerged from the Archives of the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences to uncover a dastardly plot that endangers Queen Victoria’s England, and possibly the rest of the world.

I am!

I’m going to be a guest again this year at Balticon 46, and if you’re going to be there, and you’re a Nifty Tech Blog reader, I’d like to meet you! While you can find out all about Balticon at their web site, Balticon.org, there are a lot of panels and programs to sift through to find what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for me, I’ve put up my Balticon itinerary over at Swimming Cat Studios. I’ve got twelve panels this year, plus a reading of my fiction on Monday.

See you at Balticon!

Free Will (and other compulsions), Book 2 of the Antithesis Progression

Once more, I’m visiting the Time Waster’s category, providing a new review with my personal stamp on ways you can fill up that excess personal time you have from using the Nifty Tech reviewed on these pages.

Free Will (and other compulsions) is the second book in J. Daniel Sawyer’s Antithesis Progression series, which manages to combine science fiction and noir elements into a fascinating future setting. The first book in the series is Predestination (and other games of chance). If you’ve read Predestination and enjoyed it, you’re sure to want to pick up Free Will, and no doubt look forward to the next time J. Daniel Sawyer publishes a book with a short title (and a long and contradictory subtitle). At the time of this writing, Free Will is only available in electronic formats, but is available for KindleNook, and a variety of other formats via Smashwords.

WordPress

One of the hallmarks of Nifty Tech is the fact that it takes work off of your hands. As a result, one very easily begins to take it for granted. The tech blends into the background, and instead you focus on just getting things done. This week I’m going to be looking at a piece of tech that I’ve been taking for granted for a while. This may not be useful for many, but for some of you, it could be very interesting, indeed. Today, we’re looking at WordPress.

Apple TV

This is a review that I’ve planned to do for a long time. It seems like each time I get geared up to do this review, the manufacturer changes something about the product and sets me back to square one. Which means that I’m trying to do a review of a very good, unsung piece of hardware and software, and then they do something that just makes it better. Darn them!

We are sorry for the problems with the previous post “I’m bringing Nifty Back” giving a 404 error. We’re working on the problem, but WordPress doesn’t seem to be behaving properly at all. We apologize for any inconvenience.

UPDATE: The problem is fixed now. Seems to have been a small issue with our permalinks, but we have it all sorted out.
