Welcome back to the final installment of our series with Bird House Rules. We've finally made it to our last Twitter client for iPad. This one is another newcomer to the App store, but we think they've done just about everything right. My friends, I give you Osfoora HD, for Twitter by Said M. Marouf. The name may seem a bit strange, but there is a reason for it. We'll get back to that later. Osfoora sells for $3.99, and to us, that seems like money well spent. Version 1.1.2 has a huge list of features. One of the surprising things about Osfoora HD is that it actually works as well in portrait mode as it does in landscape. The developer really put a lot of thought and effort into this client, and it shows. On top of that, he also developed and supports Osfoora for the iPhone, a separate code base. And he's just a lone developer, working on his own. Said, our hat is off to you. In many ways, you've done more on your own than many large companies have done with a team of programmers. Respect, sir!

Osfoora HD isn't really designed as eye candy in the way that TweetTime or Echofon are. It is laid out more on functional lines, but done so well that it has visual appeal. As I'm sure you've come to expect, you can get up and running fairly quickly. When you first boot up, you see one of these login screens.

If you don't already have a Twitter account, tapping the Sign Up Now link pops you out of Osfoora and into Safari to the Twitter site. I still see this as a design flaw, but honestly, most users won't notice it because they've already got Twitter accounts. For those users, just fill in your Twitter username and password and you're good to go.

In either orientation, Osfoora gives you a fairly standard column of tweets with Avatars on the left hand side. Your own tweets are color coded with a darker background, and any @ mentions are highlighted in your stream with a light blue color. You'll notice in the landscape mode that one of the tweets is pulled out on the right side, with a full set of controls for addressing the functions for the tweet. The same controls are available in portrait mode, you just need to tap a tweet in order to access them. When you do, a window scrolls down from the top of the screen.

Most of these are standard functions, or functions that you've seen in other clients by now, but Osfoora does have a few things that appear to be unique to it. Reply and retweet should be pretty recognizable. The envelope with the triangle next to it lets you Direct Message the tweeter, while the simple envelope lets you mail a tweet to someone else.

It eve sends from an internal mail client, so you can address the message, add additional comments, and send it off without leaving the application. Naturally, you can mark a tweet as a favorite if you're so inclined. The blue icon with the overlapping speech bubbles shows the rest of the conversation that the tweet is part of.

The X icon will let you delete your own tweets from the stream. This leaves us with that odd icon that looks like the letter T with a cycling arrow next to it. This is one of Osfoora's unique features: a translator. I can't fathom how this is done. There must be some online translation matrix that this taps into and sends the content of a single tweet to, retrieving the translation and displaying it in a pop-up. As far as I've been able to test it, the translation seems to do a very good job. To truly test it, you'd need a better linguist than I, but then you wouldn't need a translator program.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Welcome back to another installment of the crossover series with Bird House Rules. We're almost done with looking at Twitter clients for iPad. This week we'll be looking at a client that is a relative newcomer to the App store,</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Welcome back to another installment of the crossover series with Bird House Rules. We're almost done with looking at Twitter clients for iPad. This week we'll be looking at a client that is a relative newcomer to the App store, TweetTime for iPad by Dong-Wook Kim. TweetTime for iPad is a $2.99 purchase in the app store and is currently up to version 1.3.4. As is typical for applications for the iPad, landscape mode is more useful at illustrating the capabilities of the product than Portrait mode, so once again you'll be seeing a lot of Landscape pictures here.

TweetTime is another fully featured Twitter client, with a dash of eye candy thrown in to make things interesting. It isn't quite as pretty as Twittelator, but you can tell that some effort was made to attempt to make it visually appealing. When Tee and I sat down to look at TweetTime on mic, I had just downloaded it and hadn't really had any time to form an opinion of it, but it was one of Tee's favorites. I've since had time to take a serious look at TweetTime and get a better feel for it. You might notice that I had said that this client was one of Tee's favorites. Tee was editing the audio for the podcast and he realized that the enthusiasm just wasn't there. On either of our parts. Let me explain...
TweetTime has its good and bad points. We'll start with the good. TweetTime is a fully featured client, and it does support multiple Twitter accounts. One odd thing about that support is that there is no quick way to switch between accounts. To make the switch, you have to back out to the very first screen and tap the button for the account you wish to use.

This is the Accounts screen that appears on the main screen as a button that hides just below the bottom of the screen in the left hand navigation bar. You can reach the same information under the menu button (which is how you access it in portrait mode), but when you first look for it, it isn't very obvious.

The tools you have access to once you've chosen which account you're going to work with at the moment are fairly standard. But there are a few unique twists, and some features implemented the way we'd like to see them. The Following and Followers listings are in the order that they were added to the list, so that is good for seeing when someone followed you or you followed them, but not so great for finding a particular person. While most clients will show the users Bio field in this listing, TweetTime instead chooses to show the users latest tweet. Of course, if the person has no tweets, or they have protected them and haven't allowed you access, you won't see anything but their name.

Unfortunately, when you tap on one of those Follower entries, you're tapping on a tweet, not a profile link. So you can't get to the profile if you can't see the tweet. Not even by tapping the avatar. Once you do pull up a user's profile, it does give you fairly complete information on them.

In addition to location, web site, Tweets, the following lists and Favorites, if you scroll down just a little you can see and access any public lists this user has created. This is the actual feed of the list, not just a listing of the people on the list. And you can subscribe to the list right from the window.
Another nifty aspect is the way TweetTime displays images. While it doesn't show thumbnails in line with your tweet stream, if you tap a tweet with a link to a known image, you'll see a thumbnail of the image in the detail display for the tweet.

Tapping the link, or just about any other link in TweetTime, will take you directly to the internal browser and show you the linked page. This eliminates the step most other clients use of showing an enlarged version of the image before going to the web page, but it may be inconvenient for people who want to avoid all the other trappings of the web page.

The Near By facility in TweetTime is pretty sweet actually.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>And we're back, with another crossover review with Bird House Rules. This week we're looking at Twittelator for iPad from the folks at Stone Design, aka Big Stone Phone. Twittelator is the last of our "old favorites",</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>And we're back, with another crossover review with Bird House Rules. This week we're looking at Twittelator for iPad from the folks at Stone Design, aka Big Stone Phone. Twittelator is the last of our "old favorites", being a popular iPhone Twitter client in the past. The folks at Stone Design have been building interesting tools for a while now, and they definitely take a fresh approach to things. While there are free and paid versions of their iPhone Twittelator client, if you want it on the iPad, you'll need to pay $4.99 for the privilege. Twittelator has long been one of Tee's favorite clients on the iPhone, and is still one of his favorites on the iPad. Let me show you why.

As I imagine you've come to expect, when you first open Twittelator, it asks you about your Twitter account settings. Twittelator is one of the few clients that not only let you input your Twitter credentials, it also gives you the opportunity to sign up for a Twitter account if you don't already have one. Of course, all that clicking the Sign Up button really does is transfer you over to the Twitter mobile page in Safari and let you sign up over the web. And when you're done with that, you still have to come back to Twittelator and look at this same sign in screen.

This seems like a design flaw to me, because as you'll see later, Twittelator is perfectly capable of running an internal browser instead of dumping you out to Safari and making you come back the long way. But I imagine this one gets overlooked a lot since most people shelling out five bucks for a Twitter client will already have a Twitter account. Or more than one.
So now you've entered your account info, propped your iPad up in your favorite landscape position, and tapped the Log In button. And now you're getting your first look at Twittelator's main screen.

While Twittelator doesn't make use of every square inch of your iPad's screen, the sections it does use it puts to pretty creative use. There is certainly some eye candy here. On your left is a column that represents your Twitter stream, with avatars to the left of other people's tweets, but with the avatar to the right on your tweets, so it all displays in a a chat-style stream. The big square on the right shows your direct messages, sorted out by the sender. This is nice because it keeps things clear and you can read back in the conversation to refresh your memory on what has been said before. It really makes it hard to send a DM to the wrong person. The number to the right of the person's name is the number of messages in that thread that you haven't read on this device. To see the actual messages, just tap on the name.

The messages show up in the little column on the right just like they do on your main feed. I've removed some messages to protect privacy, but you can get an idea of what you'll be looking at with your own account. Twittelator will auto-refresh your list of tweets every 2 to 15 minutes, depending on your settings. But if you want to make a list refresh sooner, or if you've turned off the auto-refresh, just swipe down on the list of tweets that you want to update. You'll momentarily see a little Loading... message like this one.

When that message clears, you'll be able to scroll the column down and see new messages. Or you can tap the little refresh arrow. This appears in the top left of the main stream, but doesn't appear on the Direct Message list. On some of the other screens it is on the right corner. But the swipe down is always available, so it just becomes a good habit.
Now, I haven't mentioned that toolbar on the bottom right yet. That controls what kind of content you'll see in the square above it. About what you'd expect. But what you probably won't expect is how it changes the display. This is one of Tee's favorite things about Twittelator. Photos won't do this justice, so I'll see if I can capture some video to show you. For right now, I'll have to stumble along with text.</itunes:summary>

You don't need an iPod to listen to the podcast, just something that can play an MP3 file. I hope you're enjoying this series as much as we're enjoy bringing it to you.

We've looked at Tweet Flow, and at Echofon Pro. Next up, we're looking at TweetDeck for iPad. TweetDeck is another old familiar favorite. TweetDeck has long been the premiere Twitter client on the desktop, especially for people who want to monitor multiple accounts. TweetDeck Inc., the makers of TweetDeck, have tried to carry over their signature multi-column view of Twitter to the iPad. Like all the TweetDeck offerings, TweetDeck for iPad is a free app available from the App store. TweetDeck is another full-featured Twitter client. You can use it to do just about anything you would do from the Twitter website. And maybe a few things more.

When you first boot into TweetDeck for iPad, the first thing it wants to know, is what are your Twitter accounts. That's right, accounts. TweetDeck is one of the few clients that not only handles multiple accounts, but can display and send tweets to multiple accounts at the same time.

TweetDeck on the desktop has the ability to send statuses to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and a few other services. TweetDeck for iPad only deals with Twitter right now, but I expect that they're planning on adding the other services in in future releases. Just tap the Twitter button, enter your username and password on the next screen, and repeat as necessary for any other Twitter accounts you may have.

Once you've got all your accounts entered, tap Continue.

TweetDeck then asks you if you have, or want to create, a TweetDeck account. This account is used for syncing columns across TweetDeck on multiple platforms or computers. This isn't really as neat as it sounds. All it really remembers is the definitions of the individual columns. Unless you've got columns built on really complex searches, this doesn't save you a lot of effort. It is more useful as a reminder of what columns you've already built on other platforms. Here are some of the columns that TweetDeck pulls up from my account.

For the most part, it is just simple searches on hash tags. If you already have an account, or you want to see what you can do with it, you can enter your information. If not, just tap the No thanks button and move on to the main event.

By default, TweetDeck creates three columns for each of your Twitter accounts: All Friends, Mentions, and Direct Messages. If you've viewing TweetDeck in landscape mode, you'll see all of these columns at once. If you're in portrait mode, you'll just see two of them, but you can drag your finger horizontally across the tweets to scroll to the other columns. To protect the privacy of my DMs, I'm not including any pictures with that column. You'll also notice in the portrait view that there is a large empty space above the two columns of tweets. That is a focus area, we'll hit that a little later.

Two other things you'll probably notice right away. The first is the string of icons in the upper right corner. The second is a row of dots in the center of the bottom of the screen. These dots represent each of the columns defined in TweetDeck. The white ones are the currently displayed columns and the gray ones represent columns that are hidden off screen. This provides a handy guide so you'll know which way to scroll when looking for missing columns.

Let's take the icons at the top from the outside in. The yellow (or golden) one furthest right is your compose icon. Tapping this one brings up the iPad keyboard and a blank tweet window.

Just type out your message and hit send.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the second in the series of reviews with Tee Morris from the Bird House Rules podcast. In this series we are looking at Twitter clients for the iPad. Tee and I sat down and recorded audio for the Bird House Rules podcast, and I'm posting a companion review here. I encourage all my readers to also check out the audio from the podcast. You don't need an iPod to listen to the podcast, just something that can play an MP3 file. I hope you've enjoying this series as much as we enjoy bringing it to you.

Last time we looked at Tweet Flow. This time we're looking at Echofon Pro for Twitter. Echofon is one of a group of Twitter apps that we tend to think of as old familiar favorites. In Echofon's case this is because it started out as Twitterfon, a Twitter client for the Mac and the iPhone. If you're familiar with Echofon on any of these platforms, then you have a good idea what you'll see on the iPad. But with Echofon Pro, they've re-vamped things to take advantage of the iPad's screen space. Echofon was written by Naan Studio, Inc, and is available from the App Store for $4.99. Echofon Pro is a plus app, meaning that it will work on the iPhone as well as the iPad, but most of the functions we'll be talking about only exist on the iPad. Echofon is a full-featured Twitter client aimed at handling just about anything you might want to do on Twitter. We believe that it comes pretty darn close.

The first place where Echofon moves past Tweet Flow is in its ability to handle multiple Twitter accounts. You can set up as many accounts as you like, Echofon will let you switch between them at will. Admittedly, you can only view tweets associated with one account at a time, but very few clients will allow you to look at tweets from multiple accounts at the same time.

As you would expect, Echofon handles both landscape and portrait views. Portrait may be better when you're just reading what is in your stream as it lets you see more tweets at one time, but to see more of what Echofon can do, we're pretty much going to concentrate on the Landscape views.

Same tweets, just a more expanded menu bar on the left side. The Home section naturally shows you all of the tweets in your Twitter stream. The tweets are automatically updated every one, two, or three minutes according to how you've updated your settings. By default, it updates every minute. You can turn off auto-updating if you like, or refresh by tapping the refresh icon in the upper right corner.

Naturally, Echofon will show you your Mentions, Direct messages, and Favorites. Unlike Tweet Flow, Echofon also handles Twitter Lists, both lists you've created and ones that include your account. You can also create and save searches and check on trends in the tweets in your local area, across the country, or across the world. This is a fully featured app, so we won't be doing a complete walkthrough like we did with Tweet Flow. We'll just be looking at a few of the highlights.

One of the strengths of Echofon has always been its ability to track a reply back to the tweet that prompted the reply and to pull up the related tweets in the conversation. You'll notice in the above screen shot that all the tweets have an icon on the right of two overlapping conversation bubbles. That is the button for tracking back the rest of the conversation.

When you click the button, Echofon pops up a windowlet and shows the conversation so far as a chat window. Tweets are ordered with the oldest first and the more recent below. Not only does Echofon detect the tweet replied to, it finds any other tweets associated with the conversation in question and displays them. This includes comments from third parties, and any other comments made after the tweet whose button you clicked. While many other clients also supply this kind of conversation tracking, Echofon seems to have one of the best algorithms out there for selecting the relevant tweets.
