Hi, GeekOrbit!

You do have a point, having too many plugins, or poorly written plugins, will slow down your site. And you can build the same kind of functionality directly into your site, if you know enough php. But not everyone has those kind of skills, or wants to put that kind of effort into maintaining and improving their site. Wordpress' strength is letting users put up a site fast, customize it to their needs, and then go ahead and concentrate on managing their content. While there are some functions that probably should have been built into the basic system, Wordpress keeps adding new functions into the base system with each release. Let's face it, for free, open source software, you're still getting great value.

Hi Doc,

Do you feel that the site gets slower with a curtain number of plugins installed? I'm a huge believer of the end-to-end development principle and the way Wordpress works (basic functionality, each plugin a building block to add things that sometimes should've been there in the first place) doesn't always sit well with me.

Now that is an interesting question. I don't honestly know. GPS works by receiving signals from satellites and triangulating your position based on the relative signal strength and the time it takes for the signal to get to your phone. Locations Services is supposed to work the same way, by receiving signals from cell towers giving their position and a time stamp. Theoretically, this should not require any data transactions, as the phone has no need to send anything out, only to receive generic signals from cell towers and satellites. Then again, it is always possible that in order to improve accuracy, the phone might send a signal to local cell towers to confirm position. But that would require cooperation from the cellular services, and a certain intelligence in the individual cell towers. It would be much simpler to use no data and just use the strength of the signals coming in from the satellites and cell towers.

But honestly, I don't know.

Good point, Sarah. I had mentioned in the review that Nike+ GPS takes advantage of Location Services, so it hadn't occurred to me that someone would try to use it with Location Services off. But you are right, if you are having problems with Nike+ tracking, you should make sure that Locations Services are on before your next run.

So MY question, is do you have any idea how much data is used? I have an iPhone 4. I'm not sure how the GPS works on my phone actually works. I couldn't get a map unless the location services were set up to allow the app access, so does it use more one way or the other?

I have an iphone 4 and am liking this app more than the Nike Sportsband. I could never get the thing calibrated! The first time I got an actual map on my app was when I turned on the location services in the settings. It doesn't work unless this is specifically on. Hope that helps!

Actually, they don't record everything you do on your phone. You are forgetting that if you want to help improve Waze by editing the maps and improving Waze's ability to properly depict the roads, you have to go to Waze.com. The section on meta-data that you mention refers to the web site. Waze isn't capable of tracking the other activity on your phone, and you can't visit web pages from within the Waze application. That is however the kind of data that most web analytics trackers can pick up through a typical desktop browser. This data is used to help make the service more useful and make features easier to find and use. I don't find this to be a need to panic, but your mileage may vary.

As far as Waze sharing the information they gather with law enforcement, EVERYONE shares data with law enforcement. There are laws that compel the sharing of such information when it is available. While a company may value you as a customer, they are not likely to put their company on the line if you're under investigation for a crime.

So let's try to avoid breaking the law, folks.

But thanks for taking the time to read through the privacy policy. Be sure to point out if you find any other interesting clauses.

"Meta-data that we collect

Waze collects information about the use of the Services.
Thank you Don,
I found my receipt and returned it to Drum Power where I bought it from. They told me that Zoom was good with guarantee claims and that there is a 2 yr Guarantee on my Zoom H1. Wooo Hoo! So in a week or 2 I'll have a new or repaired H1 and be ready to record again.

That is an interesting question. GPS <em>should</em> work anywhere in the world, since it is dependent upon detecting signals from satellites instead of any part of the local infrastructure. Of course, it is always possible that the local authorities might require that service providers disable GPS, but that seems like a rather unusual extreme.

Many people will turn off GPS in order to preserve their battery life. Another possibility if GPS is not working for you, is that you are in an area where there is no current GPS satellite coverage. I don't know if the orbital paths of the satellites are publicly available, but it is generally accepted that there should be GPS coverage in most parts of the world.

I am not a representative of Sampson Tech, I am just a reviewer. That said, I am pretty sure that if you check the warranty information that came with your H1, you will find contact information for any warranty issues. Some manufacturers do prefer that you go through the retailer where you purchased your product, but they should still have a contact for warranty issues.

My Zoom H1 worked fine the first 4 times now it won't turn on. My old H2 still works but its big and bulky in my pocket.
I wish I could remember where I bought it so I could return it. Or can I return it to manufacturer?

Actually, this review has been in the works for a lot longer than two years, and pre-dated the most recent version of the Apple TV.

And it is important to remember that there are an awful lot of folks out there who have TVs that are older than two years and don't have Smart TV features built in. For those people, it is a lot more economical to look at buying a $100 add-on box to gain these features on their existing TVs, instead of paying hundreds or thousands of dollars to buy a new TV. If you've got the available income to be able to afford to buy the latest and greatest TV, more power to you. Let me remind you that The Nifty Tech Blog is a user-supported venue. We do not have corporate sponsors and we do not receive any reimbursement from manufacturers for doing these reviews, and every product that we review is something that we have purchased ourselves with our own money. If you've like to support our work, there is a tip jar at the top of the right hand column, and any donations you make will go towards hosting of the blog, and towards acquiring new tech to review.

The other aspect to consider is that your Smart TV will stop being useful when technology changes and you want to get new services that aren't already built in. At that point, you'll need to replace your entire TV. While Apple doesn't guarantee to upgrade the Apple TV software and firmware, if they do create a new version with new features that are not available on your current Apple TV, you're only paying $100 to replace it, not a thousand or more for a new TV.

So, while the Apple TV may be worthless to you, it isn't worthless to everyone.

I hope you find other review that are more to your liking!

I never understood the loor behind these. This is no different from a TV with built in internet apps. Honestly..Apple people just seem to go gung-hoe about every single thing that launches.

I mean seriously, it was a good review man I'm not trying to give you hate. But I just dont understand the point in these things...

Pretty much any tv created in the past 2 years has BUILT IN everything this thing has: Youtube, Netflix, buy/stream movies, watch youtube, go on the internet, etc.

Kind of worthless.

I am glad you liked the review. We have a number of reviews planned for Wordpress plugins. I think you'll find them very interesting.

While I don't have a stand-out photo plug in quite yet, I have been working some with NextGEN Gallery. That is the plugin that is responsible for the changing backgrounds over at <a href='http://www.doccoleman.com' rel="nofollow">www.DocColeman.com</a>. I'm still looking over some of the other capabilities it has. I will let you know what I find.

Thanks for the wordpress review. I'm currently using one for my for-family baby-blog.

I'd love a recommendation on a plugin/add on for a better way to organize photos there. I upload most via my wordpress app on my smartphone, then have to add each individually to an album when I get the time. I also have them on subpages, but I'm not sure that's the best way to manage them.

Glad you liked the review. While the Apple TV may not be for everyone, it does do a good job of allowing you to display content from the net or your computer up on your large screen TV. There are several areas where it could be improved, but what it does, it does well.

Hi,

To me it sounds like there is some confusion between the Nike+ GPS app reviewed here, and the Nike+ iPod app that comes with most iPods and iPhones these days. While these are similar programs, they aren't the same. Nike + GPS uses GPS signals and the internal motion sensors of the iPhone to track your progress. Nike+ iPod uses an external sensor that goes into your shoe to track your progress.

If you're using the Nike sensor in your shoe, you need to make sure that you are using the Nike+ iPod app. With that app, you won't need to carry your iPhone as long as your sensor is in your shoe while you are on the treadmill.

If you're using the Nike+ GPS software, then you don't need the sensor, but you will need to have the iPhone on your person in order to track your progress.

I hope that cleared things up. If not, have you tried the forums over at http://nikerunning.nike.com/ ? There you can get help from other users, and occasionally from Nike support.

An hour and a half? Good grief!

The new Apple TV doesn't have that kind of issue. However, if the problem with your previous rental experience is the fact that you've got lousy bandwidth, you may still have issues. When you rent a movie or TV show on the current Apple TV, it streams down from the internet. It will take a few moment to buffer part of the show before you can start playing, but you aren't locked into a download screen. You can browse around at other content. When the movie is ready to play, the Apple TV will tell you.

However, if you do have issues with bandwidth, you may experience stutters and hangs while watching the show. This isn't Apple's fault.

Interestingly enough, last week my wife and I were watching an episode of Dexter on the Apple TV that was streaming from the iTunes library on my server. We had problems with stutters and momentary hangs. About half way through, the show hung up altogether. My issue in this case was that my server that was sending the content to the Apple TV was overloaded, as it was also managing backups of at least three different computers simultaneously. Since we had bought the episode from the iTunes Store, we switched over to the streamed version. Never had a problem. It can be weird the way that works.

I think you'll find the Apple TV to be much more versatile than the Video Connection Kit. Crossing my fingers and hoping you don't run into any more hour plus download times! At least with streaming video, you're OK if it takes that long, as long as the show doesn't play faster than it downloads.

I've been eyeing the Apple TV for a while, debating whether to get it or the Video Connection Kit. They're both the same price, and I think the Apple TV offers much more. I just had my first experience with renting a movie on iTunes, and the only bummer was that we had to wait for the entire movie to download before we could watch it. A spontaneous choice turned into a 1.5 hour wait for an HD download. I imagine the same is true through the Apple TV?

For only $99 I think I'm going to get one to replace the TiVO I'm ditching this month.

I understand that mirroring to the Apple TV is one of the new iPad functions, but I've never used it in mirror mode. I should try playing with that sometime after work this week.

My family liked the Apple TV so much we have three. Two of the old ones, the ones with built in hard drives for syncing with iTunes, and one of the new pucks. One of the old ones had to be retired to make room for the puck. Or semi-retired. If we get a new TV for the bedroom, we'll move the old one to the guest room and put it back into service.

I'm think of getting one for the Den TV. One - I could use a Netflix device (currently I'm using a Wii). Two - Since my wife has an iPad2 she could use it to mirror what's on it to the TV.

Mohammed,

I'm not sure what I can tell you. I'm just a reviewer, I'm not tech support. But I will give it my best shot. I just don't know if you'll like what I have to say.

Your ability to get a good GPS signal depends on several factors. One of those is line of sight from your position to the GPS satellite. If there is cloud cover, or even tree cover, it will degrade your ability to receive the GPS signals clearly. Another potential problem is local interference. If you are using your GPS receiver near a strong source of interference, such as a radio or TV tower, a power station, or even high power lines strung over the road you are running on, it may negatively effect your ability to get a clear GPS signal. The last problem is geographical location. While there are a lot of GPS satellites in orbit, they don't cover everywhere. Some countries don't like the idea of American satellites in their sky. Even if the satellites are above the horizon, they may not be close enough to your location to give you a good signal.

In each case, they best you can do is try running in different locations to see if you get a more satisfactory signal in a new locations. The GPS in the iPhone is just a receiver. There isn't a lot you can do to improve the reception if you happen to live or exercise in an area that is a natural dead spot. Now, if you can compare with someone else's iPhone and determine that they get a good GPS signal and you don't, that may be an indicator that your device needs repair.

I'm afraid I can't really help any more than that. I hope you can find a solution to your issue

[...] When you first buy a computer and set it up in your home, you don't need much regarding connections ...age-644 aligncenter" title="Apple Airport Extreme Base Station" src="http://electronicproductreviews.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Apple-Airport-Extreme-Base-Station.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" />A good wireless solution might be the Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station. You'll have a blazingly fast and secure wireless network. This router enables you to easily hook up your backup system, printer, entertainment options and more on your wireless network. You are going to have reliable connections depending on the simultaneous use of 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz bands. You can have your friends access only the internet along with the other stuff on your network. As many as fifty connections can be made at the same time. You can create a shared drive by means of hooking up a USB hard drive to the router. The Apple Airport Extreme transmits multiple avenues of information making use of multiple-input multiple output technology and is compatible with the Wireless-N specifications. The effect is a faster data transfer over the 802.11g wireless standard plus features a much broader range. PCs Macs, iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches all function with this specific router. Because the router utilizes both 2.4 GHz and 5GHz ranges at the same time, the units will always have ideal range and speed. The connection to the band range is done automatically by the router so there are no modifications made by the user. It has printing capabilities which are wireless, and also do not even require a wired connection to the computer. All you need is to link the printer to the Airport Extreme, and start printing as soon as you add it to the printer list on your Mac or PC. This technology permits any individual on your network to print to a core location. If it is competent at sharing, you can connect virtually any USB device to the router so that any person can access it on your network. You can attach a hard drive, printer or multiple printers or hard drives. When you first started, you were one simple person with one computer. You could not accomplish much except search websites and not much else. You may have never had a wireless network setup or even had a router. You slowly learned and expanded your total operation, and now you have a whole network connected to your Apple Airport Extreme Base Station that works better than you hoped. [...]

Thanks a lot, Carl! We really try hard with every review to be as complete as we can be. We may not have the first reviews on new products, but when we do a review, you know we've lived with a product for a while and we've tried to identify any hidden issues it may have. I was very lucky to have a friend who is a professional sound engineer to help me out with this review. I could talk to you all day about ease of use of a recording system like the H1, and it still wouldn't be a complete review without some mention of the quality of the recording. John Taylor Williams has the background ( and the trained ears) that I lacked to address the quality of the H1 with authority. We are very grateful to John and hope we'll be able to work with him on future reviews.
A number of folks have told us that they have ordered H1s based on this review, and we are happy to report that without exception they have all been very happy with the purchase. I hope you have a similar experience with yours.
We look forward to hearing from you again!

Really appreciate the time and obvious effort that went into this review. The fact that you guys really put the H1 through its paces and even had a professional sound guy help out is just incredible. I wish all product reviews were like this. I ordered an H1 today thanks largely to this great review. Thanks again. You guys are awesome.

Thanks! Re: the dual cameras, I did say "in the model I would have gotten" which was the generation one iPad. Sam's club had them for a little less than the gen-two model and they only have one camera that I recall.

I have run into instances where Flash would have been useful to a degree on my iPhone, but you're right, it is rare. Still the thought that they don't offer it when they could have bothers me.

Finally, you're right. That is a concern, but I don't think Asus is going anywhere and honestly I think if I never got another update I'd be okay.

Nice review Scott, one corrections, the iPad 2 does indeed have dual cameras, although most people would tell you that the camera's do in blow, they are there.

Now having been one of the few Android users who migrated to an iPhone and iPad I have to say, the idea of no flash support makes even me grumble, but in all practicality I "almost" never run into a problem with it on either of my iOS devices. The web it seems has adapted to devices with a lack of flash.

But in the end it's all about getting the most tech for your buck and the Asus certainly does have good reviews, and the price seems right. I just hope they sell enough to justify keeping it updated, that's always my fear with the "alternative" products.

J. Lopez,

I'm afraid I don't know what to tell you. Nike+ GPS is supposed to work with the iPhone 4 and compatable treadmills. It is even supposed to work when running on a regular treadmill. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with using them together. Have you tried the Nike+ forums for help?

I can try to dig around and see if I can find something that fits your problem, but I doubt I'm likely to come up with something that you haven't already found.

Sorry I can't help more.

I can't seem to get the iPhone 4 and Nike+ to work on a treadmill. After awhile it simply can't register the run. I'm using an arm band to hold the phone, but that should work as my arms are moving during the run... Don't know. Does the GPS have to be green to be accurate? LOST!

Jo,

I suspect what you're seeing is actually a calibration error. If you reset to the default calibration, it may not accurately track your path and may give you results that have your traveling much more or much less than you have really traveled. If you did a calibration run and then you got those off results, then odds are good you had some kind of GPS error during your calibration run.

How to fix it: Your best bet is to do another calibration run. Find a place where you know the exact distance between two points. For most folks the easiest thing to do is find a track where a single lap around the innermost track is a quarter mile. You can calibrate on a quarter mile, but you're likely to get better results with a half mile or more, so go to the track, start your calibration run, and do two to four laps around the track. When you've finished your run, make sure to set the distance for the run to be the exact distance you've traveled.

I hope this helps you!

Oops! You're right, I completely forgot about Coupling! To be fair, I have only seen one or two episodes of that show, and not exactly in the correct order. I really need to find time to catch up on some of these excellent British shows.

Thanks for the correction!

Don't forget <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupling_(UK_TV_series)" rel="nofollow">Coupling</a>! Probably fewer people who read your blog for recs have heard of it, but it's so funny. One of his previous series, produced with his wife Sue Vertue and loosely inspired by their relationship (and two of the characters are named Steve and Susan), centered on six friends who hang out in a pub. It's available for streaming on Netflix. It's one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, and there is some meta-humor available for Doctor Who fans. Jack Davenport, Gina Bellman, Sarah Alexander, Kate Islett, Ben Miles, and Richard Coyle.

Ellen,

I listen to podcasts during my runs and I've never had an issue with it. Then again, I create playlists of podcasts and play that when using Nike+. You should have no problem selecting a playlist with podcasts in it from inside the app.

The other way of listening to podcasts is to start the iPod on your device playing, then bring up Nike+ and select Now Playing as the music. Your iPod will continue to play through. In fact, you can switch over to the iPod if it is more convenient to change your audio track while on the run, then switch back to Nike+.

Hope that helped you!

I got an iPhone a couple days ago, and the Nike+GPS is one of my FAVORITE features that I've gotten so far! Love it, love it. The only problem I'm having is playing podcasts during my runs. I can't figure out how to get it to play anything other than music - do you have any tips?

Scott

Thank you so much for this write-up! When we first started this site I thought I was an oddity in my passion for both theology and the undead genre. I can't even begin to express how awesome it is that so many people, like yourself, have proven me wrong.

We try not to force our beliefs through the site, but try to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable and has fun with this great world that Mr. Romero has created for us! Again, thank you so much for the write-up and support of the site!

As always we pray for your sanity and survival in these dark days…

I had my H1, and I know that Scott Roche had his, and I saw you with yours. I guess it is possible that we didn't see many H1s because many of the folks doing recording had already gotten H2 or H4 models before the H1 came out. I didn't see as much recording going on this year as I saw last year. It could just be a wrong place, wrong time sort of thing. Hard to say.

Arioch,

I don't know if it works with all iPod Touches, to be honest. It works with the Location Services built into the device, which may not include GPS. To be honest I'm not up on the iPod Touch. Since the iPod Touch doesn't have cellular connectivity, it would use positioning based on the Wi-Fi hotspots it can see and what (if any) geopositioning data is available for those networks. I would imagine that accuracy wouldn't be as good with the iPod Touch, but Nike does claim that it is compatible. I'm afraid that I did not have access to an iPod Touch for testing.

Sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer.

Interesting. Have you actually run into this 100,000 note restriction, Doug? My research didn't turn up anything about this. I'll admit that I haven't created quite that many notes yet. How did you find out about this limit?

I'll agree that they shouldn't advertise it as unlimited if there is a finite limit and they don't intend to fix the problem. But if they are intending to fix the limit, I'll cut them some slack. Of course at this point I've not heard one way or the other. Still, something does need to be fixed.

Thanks for telling me about this. Hopefully the Evernote folks will take notice and address the issue.

It actually isn't true that you can add unlimited notes. Even though Evernote says so at https://www.evernote.com/about/premium/, Evernote support tells me that is a "typo".

All accounts are restricted to an absolute maximum of 100,000 notes. Still a lot. But not by any means "unlimited."

I requested they correct it, because it's false advertising, but they still haven't taken any action on it.

The app itself is also wrong, because it tells you approximately how many text notes are remaining this month, and for me it lists like 470,000. But with the absolute cap of 100,000 that's just plain wrong.

Thanks for the recommendation. As I do with all your Twitter recommends, I check to see if I'm already following. If not (like this one), then I happily click the follow button & check out a few of their tweets :)

I think @ThinkGeek is another one of those cool Twitter accounts to follow because of the awesome geeky stuff they sell :)

I just realized that I left out one of the coolest things about Waze's method of collecting traffic info: They collect info on all roads traveled.

Most traffic monitoring services only watch major roads. Secondary and tertiary roads are completely ignored because it is too expensive to set up cameras and monitor them. With Waze's method, you get information about backups and accidents wherever a Waze user encounters them, so you'll have a better chance of knowing if the secondary roads are snarled up worse than the main roads. You get a lot more depth of traffic info at no additional cost.

Thanks for this answer. I could not understand why my H1 only showed 20 minutes of recording time after I had erased all the files. I followed your directions for formatting the disc and now I'm back up to 34 hours of recording space (mp3).

The Fusion Tables sound pretty interesting, BigJohn. Does the overlaid data show up in the maps for the world to see, or on a special, separate document?

Thanks for your input!

Google Docs is good for basic spreadsheet functions that need to be portable. The portability is the key factor. And most people really don't need the kind of in depth number crunching power that Excel and Numbers have. In fact, I have both Excel and Numbers, and I haven't been able to do a proper review on either because I don't have a need that would really test the capabilities of either one.

If you've had that kind of heavy-duty spreadsheet useage, we could talk about a guest review. :D

I've been using Google docs for a number of years; I used to keep a league's scores on a shareable spreadsheet that i published on my league's blog. No fuss, no muss, minimal work. Of late, I've been playing around with Google's Fusion Tables, which allow you to take Google doc spreadsheet data and overlay it onto Google's own maps.

I haven't tried too many power calculations with Google Docs, so for most of my more complex spreadsheets I stick with Excel. But I'm all for the concept of the free Google docs and all they have to offer. That spreadsheet-to-form thing sounds really interesting. I have to try to see if I can use that!

I love google spreadsheets and the forms are great, I use them all the time. I like the fact that you document is online and it can work as a living document that can be accessed from every computer. My most used spreadsheets are my time accounting sheets (Where I track hours spent on each client and how much to charge them) and a form on a website that users can use to ask for access to something. This way even if I am not on my computer I can give them access.

If I wanted to get deep into spreadsheets i have to say I prefer numbers, it's like Excel on crack, there is so much more that can be done in there.

For someone who travels as much as you do, these speakers are a very convenient. The Amazon price is about the best I’ve found for them. Feel free to use the link in the above article. I really need to get my Amazon Affiliate store moved over to the new site. Unfortunately, I’ve let it get a little out of date.

So far the only potential downsides I've found for them are the retracting mechanism can sometimes be finicky, and the fact that the rechargeable batteries are built in and will eventually wear out. Other than that, they are very cool.

Thanks for reading!

I've been wanting to try these for a while, or rather buy them for myself. I have tried them, once. A co-worker of mine had a pair a while ago, they were quoted to me as much more expensive then. They do offer some great sound and are small enough to carry in my case. I might buy them now that price has come down
