I follow a lot of different creative people on Twitter. I follow a lot of creatively different people on Twitter. And I follow some people who are just good folks. But sometimes you find someone who is creative, different, and still good folks. To demonstrate my meaning, I give you @Dansr.

This week we have a special late night #FollowFriday to honor one of my favorite late night stars. In this case, the star in question isn’t known for late night television, but is instead a television star who is usually up late at night. Folks, I give you the official Twitter of Pauley Perrette, @PauleyP, probably best known as Abby Sciuto, the quirky and sexy forensic scientist on CBS’s “NCIS.”

#FollowFriday – @steven_moffat: Writer, producer, and top dog of Doctor Who and Sherlock

I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who for a long, long, long time. I stumbled across the show in the early 1980′s and have been watching ever since. Some fans of the old series cringe and cried when the new series came out in 2005, but I stayed with it, enjoying the higher production values the new series was able to achieve on the same dirt-cheap budget. And despite some strange stumbles and twists, it has mostly been worth while. One of the masterminds of the new Doctor Who series, and the current executive producer, is this week’s Follow Friday recommendation: @Steven_Moffat. Steven is the crafty mind behind some of the most twisted and intricate plots ever shown on Doctor Who.

#FollowFriday – @PCHaring: Writer, Podcaster, Violist, Voice Actor, and the most interesting Accountant I’ve found.

There are some professions that just have a reputation for being boring. Politicians rate high on that list. As do lawyers. And even librarians. But topping the list of boring professions by far are accountants. There is just something about accounting that tends to make people’s eyes glaze over. But we’re not talking about boring people here. We’re talking about interesting people. We’ve had interesting lawyers and librarians in past Follow Friday posts. Now it is time for a very interesting accountant. He’s not just interesting for an accountant, he’s a downright creative person who just happens to also be an accountant. Meet @PCHaring.

Phoenix Rising: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel

This review is the first in a new series of reviews. I’ve been planning to do this for a while. It has just taken some time to find the right thing to review and time to review it. You might notice that this review is in the category “Time Wasters”.  That doesn’t mean that things in this category are a waste of time. While the rest of the reviews on The Nifty Tech Blog are aimed at productivity, reviews in this category are for ways to occupy the leisure time you’ll have after using all the other products we’ve recommended.

Phoenix Rising: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel is the first novel from Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris writing together. They take us back to the age of Queen Victoria, and give us a view of a secret organization in Her Majesty’s government. This clandestine organization, the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences, deals with the strange, the bizarre, and those things best not talked about in polite society. Agents of the Ministry travel the world investigating these strange and unusual events, and returning dangerous artifacts to Mother England where they can be safely stored away from dangerous hands.

#FollowFriday – @WootShirt – Your daily dose of unique, interesting, and just bizzare t-shirts.

Normally, I wouldn’t recommend following a Twitter account that only exists as a marketing ploy. To make me change this policy, you’ve really got to be offering something out of the ordinary that makes it worth the trouble. I have to say, @WootShirt does that in spades.

Waze

by Doc Coleman June 6, 2011 Android

For some time now, we’ve been looking at different turn by turn navigation apps. We’ve seen a number of them that were pretty good, but costly, some that were decent, but free, and even a few that were very useful, but required an annual subscription. The big problem with turn by turn apps has been traffic. Add some traffic problems and the best GPS can become worthless, unless it can route you around the traffic. As a general rule, a dedicated GPS tends to do a better job, but there are times when your dedicated GPS fails or isn’t available. Having an app on your smart phone can make the difference between getting there and getting lost. While Waze isn’t perfect, it does have an innovative take on managing the traffic issue that we think makes it worth the look.

#FollowFriday – @Balticon: The official Twitter stream of the Balticon convention!

For a lot of my Twitter stream, this weekend will find people either going completely silent… or tweeting like the Rapture has been post-dated and someone is coming to collect! This is because, like myself, they will be at Balticon, a regional Science Fiction/Fantasy Convention held every year on Memorial Day Weekend by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. The Balticon crew is made up of a number of Sci-Fi enthusiasts who volunteer their time and talents to produce a magnificently entertaining convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland each year. As my nod of respect to them and their efforts, this week I’m recommending @Balticon, the official Twitter feed for the convention!

#FollowFriday – @MadPoet: Writer, Editor, Podcaster, Attorney, Captain of Flying Island Press, Herder of Cats

Over the past year (and more) I have recommended quite a number of creative people on Twitter. Today, I’m going to recommend someone who takes that a step farther. This is a gentleman who goes the extra mile in creative endeavors by leading them. Creative people can be a difficult lot. This is natural, as their minds are always finding new angles on things. They can be a pretty slippery bunch. And Zack Ricks, aka @MadPoet, dares to lead a bunch of these creative folks. This explains the receding hairline.
