For a lot of my Twitter stream, this weekend will find people either going completely silent… or tweeting like the Rapture has been post-dated and someone is coming to collect! This is because, like myself, they will be at Balticon, a regional Science Fiction/Fantasy Convention held every year on Memorial Day Weekend by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. The Balticon crew is made up of a number of Sci-Fi enthusiasts who volunteer their time and talents to produce a magnificently entertaining convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland each year. As my nod of respect to them and their efforts, this week I’m recommending @Balticon, the official Twitter feed for the convention!
But the @Balticon feed is not just for convention season alone. The feed is kept live all year round. A number of different panels are recorded at Balticon each year, and private interviews are held before and during the event. Podcasts of these are released from time to time, keeping the convention alive and allowing those who missed particular panels to not miss out completely, and those who were there to relive the experience. @Balticon will let you know when these podcasts will be released, and provides help and assistance through the year on pre-and post Balticon activities. Dragon*Con may be bigger, but our hearts belong to @Balticon!
And don’t think that it is all cold, impersonal press releases, either. There is a real person behind the @Balticon persona and he demonstrates a fair share of wit and personality with his tweets. Of course, there may be a lot of in jokes, but the best way of catching on to those is to show up for the Con! Balticon 45 is running this weekend from Friday at 5 PM through Monday, May 30th at 3 PM. If you can make it to Hunt Valley, day rates are available for quick visits, and you can still register for the whole con. If you can’t make it this year, now is an excellent time to start planning for Balticon 46.
Scott Roche and I will be at Balticon this year as guests and will be doing a number of panels and special recordings, including the Galley Table Live! podcast on Saturday at 3PM. I will also be doing The Metamor City Podcast on Sunday at 7 PM, and The Shrinking Man Project Live! podcast on Monday at 1 PM. We hope to see you there!
